Greatness in a small package. On 17 February 1894, at the Teatro de Apolo in Madrid, Tomás Bretón and Ricardo de la Vega unknowingly achieved a milestone of Spanish lyric theatre: fitting the scope of the full-scale zarzuela, the staged tonadilla and the comic sketches of Juan de la Cruz or Juan del Castillo into a single hour, they presented La verbena de la Paloma o El boticario y las chulapas o Celos mal reprimidos.
