On a rocky spur overlooking Sax rises its castle, with two towers on the ridge. It forms a trio with the Villena and Biar fortresses on the Vinalopó castle route.
History
The Islamic fortress passed to Christian hands in the 13th century and stayed a landmark of the Vinalopó corridor. Its silhouette on the rock has marked the town skyline ever since.
What to see
The two ridge towers, the entrance gate and the keep shown in the enclosure views. Allow time for the ridge walk between the towers. From the enclosure there are views over the old town, at the foot of the rock, and the valley.
Tips for your visit
- Walk down afterwards to the Asunción church, under the castle rock.
- The climb is over rock and slope; wear grippy shoes.
