Maigmó
Symmetrical cone of 1296 m with a crown of crags, emblem of the Alicante plain, in the Maigmó i Sit protected landscape. Loop: 15 km, 738 m.
Maigmó is a symmetrical cone of 1,296 m with a crown of crags, the emblematic peak of the Alicante plain, inside the Serra del Maigmó i Serra del Sit protected landscape. The summit, wholly in the municipality of Tibi, was marked by a geodetic vertex, and the long ridge views run from the Xorret de Catí side towards the coast. A logged summit loop runs 9.33 miles (about 15 km) with 2,421 ft (738 m) of climbing, rated moderate, in just under 7 hours, with steep climbs flagged on the track.
Rock and protection
The massif groups Maigmó with the Sit, Despenyador, Argüenya and neighbouring ranges, all topping 1,000 m, under one protected landscape with inland sand banks, holm-oak woods and pine forest. The Balcó d'Alicante recreation area, in Tibi at nearly 1,000 m of altitude, gives sea-facing views and a base for the high paths. It is the stiffest walk in this set, for fit walkers only, unlike the gentler Carrascar de la Font Roja woods further north.
Getting there
Drive towards Tibi and the Xorret de Catí roads, about 120 km from València; a car is needed, as no public transport reaches the high trailheads. Start from the Xorret de Catí area roads and carry the track, since bays and junctions are unsigned.
Tips
- Go from autumn to spring; the long ridge gives little shade in summer.
- Carry plenty of water and food: the loop runs near 7 hours with steep climbs.
- Check wind on the summit ridge before committing to the crags.
