Muela de Ares
A 1319 m table mountain with the village almost on its crown and open views over Maestrazgo and Els Ports.
The Muela de Ares is a 1319-metre table mountain in the Alt Maestrat, with the village of Ares almost on its crown, just over a kilometre away. From the top, views open over Maestrazgo and Els Ports, with farmhouses and dry-stone walls spread across the slopes. The summit lies just over a kilometre from the centre, and the walk involves no serious climbing.
The visit
It is an easy, family-friendly outing: you park in the upper village streets and stroll to the edges of the tableland, with no serious climbing. Ares keeps ice houses, walls and traces of its Templar past, so the morning leaves time for wandering as well as looking. It is colder and windier than the coast at any season, so bring an extra layer.
Tips for your visit
It is the longest drive in the zone, about two hours from Valencia, so leave early and combine the day with Morella and its castle. Keep back from the cliff edges and respect the village streets when parking.
