The walls of Sant Mateu ring the historic enclosure of San Mateo, capital of the Maestrazgo under the Order of Montesa. Wall stretches and gates survive within the old centre, between houses and squares.
The walls
The enclosure defended the Montesa town and its fairs and markets. The visible stretches are read by walking the old centre, with the archpriestal church and the belfry as landmarks. The wall walk takes under an hour, with stops at squares, gates and viewpoints. Wear comfortable shoes.
