Plaza de la Sequiota
The heart and original core of El Palmar, right beside the church, where the village's first barracas were built. It is a calm, pleasant square whose main draw is a picturesque fountain at one end, ringed by cafés and rice restaurants serving the local cuisine. A good starting point for wandering among canals and traditional houses.
The Plaza de la Sequiota is the oldest heart of El Palmar, the fishing village some 15 km from Valencia inside the Albufera Natural Park. The first barracas stood beside the church, making the square a natural starting point for exploring the village. It is also commonly called the El Palmar square.
Plaza de la Sequiota, where El Palmar began
The Sequiota ground is the original nucleus, the spot where El Palmar settled as a fishing hamlet. Today it reads as a small, calm square with a fountain closing one end and the unhurried rhythm the whole village keeps outside meal hours. Stand by the fountain and the layout orients itself.
Eating around the square
Cafés and rice houses ring the paving, serving the Albufera canon at table:
- Arroz a banda, one of the local rice dishes.
- All i pebre with eel, the local measure of a kitchen.
- Valencian paella, another dish served around the square.
Eating here belongs to the visit, and many arrive at the square with a table already in mind. Book lunch, then let the afternoon slow down around you.
Walking out from the fountain
The streets from the square lead to the Comunidad de Pescadores building, an important institution in village history; the canals are another part of a walk from this starting point. The fountain marks one end of the square and provides a reference point before you follow the streets towards the canals. Linger without agenda: sit, eat, then walk the canals and watch how life lines up along them.
