The Racó del Duc is the narrows where the Serpis river runs between vertical limestone walls, crossed by the Vía Verde greenway along the old Alcoi to Gandia railway. The walk from Villalonga follows the river past the Pont del Tarassó viewpoint, the metal bridge by the old Racó del Duc factory and the weirs, and reaches the Fàbrica de l'Infern area through rock tunnels. The logged trail The logged trail follows the greenway out and back, rated easy.
River and railway
The greenway reuses the rail bed that once linked the Mariola mills with the sea at Gandia, so the path is wide and steady, with cuttings, long tunnels and masonry bridges over the water. The Serpis keeps riverside woodland along the narrows, and the old factories and weirs mark the industrial past of the gorge. It is a river walk near Gandia, and it shares the river with the Beniarrés reservoir upstream.
Getting there
Drive to Villalonga, about 70 km from València; a car is needed, since the riverside start has no public transport. Walkers park on the Camí del Tarrassó and cross the Serpis by the footbridge to join the greenway. For a second outing by Gandia, the Parpalló-Borrell natural area offers a contrasting mountain walk.
Tips
- Bring a headlamp: the tunnels are unlit and the floor is uneven.
- After heavy rain the riverside path can be muddy; check conditions first.
- There are no confirmed bathing rules for the Serpis here; treat the river as look-only unless signed otherwise.
