Banyeres de Mariola, in the north of Alicante about 87 km from Valencia, counts 7,347 residents at the foot of the Mariola range. The 12th-century Arab castle, with its 17-metre tower, withstood the War of Succession sieges and earned the town the royal title in 1708.

At its foot, the Misericordia church, begun in 1734 in Corinthian Baroque, serves a paper-making town whose story the Paper Museum tells from the 1903 Villa Rosario chalet. The April festival, of national interest, completes the portrait.

The April Moors and Christians festival, listed as of national tourist interest, is the big date of the year. The town keeps its mountain-village air, with the castle always in sight from the streets, and works as a base for walking the Mariola range, with its paths among farmhouses, springs and woods. The museum and the castle can be visited in a single morning on foot. The old town gathers around the castle slopes in quiet streets.
