What to see in Calles
Calles, about 59 km from València, is a Serranía village with about 400 residents. It is the gateway to the Peña Cortada aqueduct from the Chelva side, on the Ruta del Agua.
The 2nd-century Peña Cortada Roman aqueduct crosses the gorge cut into the rock, with standing arches above the trail. In the centre, the 17th-century Purisima church organises the village with the Santa Quiteria chapel, in the upper Ermita quarter. The municipality adds Levantine rock-art shelters, a listed asset not signposted for visits.
The village is seen in one morning between the church and the upper-quarter chapel, and the Peña Cortada trail fills the next half day. The Ruta del Agua links Calles with Chelva through the gorge: bring walking boots and water.
Local tip
Church and chapel first, then the Peña Cortada trail with half a day and walking boots. Bring water: there are no services on the trail.
