What to see in Castalla
Castalla, capital of its namesake Foia about 100 km from Valencia, gathers 11,908 residents at 675 metres of altitude. The castle crowns the hill over Neolithic, Iberian, Roman and Arab remains, with the town gathered on its slopes.
The Sangre hermitage, primitive Gothic from the second half of the 13th century, was the first church until the Asunción, with 1536 vaults and a 17th-century portal, took over. It is the land of the writer Enric Valor and of the 1-4 September festival.
The town breathes literature: the writer Enric Valor was born here and set his stories in this Foia landscape. The Moors and Christians festival, from 1 to 4 September, fills the streets with military parades, and the 18th-century neoclassical convent of the Franciscanos Mínimos rounds off an old town walked on foot between the main street and the castle. Castalla connects by the A-7 with Alicante and Valencia, and by the CV-80 with Elda and Villena.
