What to see in Montesa
Montesa, about 62 km from València in the Costera, gave its name to the Valencian military Order, founded by Jaume II in 1319. With some 1,100 residents (2025), it is a town of castle, church and viewpoint.
Above, the castle-convent, headquarters of the Order until the 1748 earthquake ruined it, is a national monument since 1926, with a restored chapter hall. Below, the church of the Asunción (1693-1702) keeps a Baroque trasagrario and a 1744 organ, unique of its period in the province. The 16th-century Santa Cruz hermitage faces the valley from its hill.
The plan joins hill, church and viewpoint in a morning and pairs with nearby Xàtiva. Finds place the castle hill back to the Bronze Age.
The visit needs a morning: Order castle-convent with chapter hall, Asunción with the 1744 organ and Santa Cruz with views. The afternoon allows Xàtiva, minutes away, to follow the castle route.
