In the Penella district, in the municipality of Cocentaina, survives the Penella Castle, a rural rammed-earth fortress. Its 4-by-12-metre tower is the most visible remain of the enclosure.
History
Like other rural castles of El Comtat, Penella watched over the farmsteads and paths around it. The rammed-earth technique, tamped soil in formwork, dates its fabric to the area's medieval building tradition.
