Cueva de las Calaveras
900 metre-plus cave on the Seguili slope, with 20 metre domes, an inner lake and a visitable dry section by the road.
The Cueva de las Calaveras opens on the northern slope of the Seguili, in the municipality of Benidoleig, beside the Pedreguer road. It is a cavity of more than 900 metres noted for its high ceilings, with domes over 20 metres, stalactites and stalagmites; about 500 metres of flooded inner stretch feed irrigation, so the visit covers the dry zone of more than 400 metres.
Hours and price
It opens Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 19:00 and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 20:00, and entry is paid: confirm current prices on the official site before going. The grounds hold their own parking, a cafeteria and a picnic zone, plus a playground, and the route suits children.
The name
It owes its name to the remains of twelve people found inside during a 17th century speleological expedition, and the cave was occupied since Neanderthal times, with fossils and bone remains along the route. You get there by car; from the coast at Xàbia it is a short inland trip. Wear closed shoes: the cave floor can be damp.
