The Peñagolosa Natural Park protects the massif around its 1,813 m summit, in the Alcalatén district and within the Iberian System. It is the landmark mountain of inland Castellón and is often crowned with snow in winter. At its base stands the Sant Joan de Penyagolosa sanctuary, a pilgrimage destination, and the usual access starts in Vistabella del Maestrat.

Summit and sanctuary

The summit is the main goal, a demanding climb that can hold snow and ice in winter. The Sant Joan sanctuary, at the foot of the mountain, works as a reception point and reference for the area routes. The park is the protected frame of the whole site, with a visitor centre to plan the visit.
