Castillo y Torre del Homenaje

The Castillo y Torre del Homenaje crowns the old town ridge of Requena, a fortress of Moorish origin looking over the medieval Villa and the vineyard plateau. Standing walls survive around it, and the 15th-century keep rises over 23 metres, now carrying the town interpretation centre. From the crown the whole Villa and the vine country open below.

The enclosure reaches back to Andalusi times, when Requena held the frontier and its strategic value ran high. Later centuries reinforced and adapted the walls, and the keep grew into the main defensive mass of the ensemble. Climbing through it reads as a walk across frontier centuries in a single slope.

Inside the keep

The tower now houses an interpretation centre on city history, a sound primer before dropping into the old town lanes at its feet. From the top, you can see the whole medieval Villa and the vineyards that made the region famous. The ascent is brief and the payoff immediate. Tickets and hours

The keep costs 2 euros, while a combined ticket for the Caves and four museums runs 8 euros. Opening spans Tuesday to Sunday, with Mondays shut; check the monumental complex hours before setting out. Sturdy shoes help, since the old town climb pitches underfoot.
