Complejo Educativo de Cheste
Large 1960s education complex by Moreno Barberá, Brutalist in exposed concrete.
South of Cheste, the education complex, the former Universidad Laboral, is a major piece of 1960s Spanish architecture. Moreno Barberá signed it in exposed concrete.
History
The complex went up in the sixties as a labour university, with halls, workshops and boarding for thousands of pupils. The Brutalist complex by Moreno Barberá arranged the programme in a concrete grid that critics have praised for decades.
What to see
The exposed-concrete halls, the courtyards and the scale of the complex, best read from outside. It is a working education building: see the outside with respect for school life. In the town stand the church of San Lucas and, outside, the circuit.
Tips for your visit
- Come on weekdays outside school hours to see it calmly.
- Do not enter the halls: it is a working school.
