What to see in Paterna
Paterna, about 7 km from València, counts about 76,000 residents between historic core, caves and modern city. Its kilns gave the medieval ware that made it known, and La Cordà, its fire-and-rocket festivity, is of national tourist interest.
The Arab Paterna tower, with shields and inscriptions, is the symbol above the cave quarter. The ceramics museum holds the leading collection of medieval ware from the town kilns. The 14th-century San Pedro church, remodelled in the 1700s, closes the old quarter. The Coves del Batà are cave dwellings in cultural use, and five Turia weirs are listed cultural assets.
The tower, the museum and the Coves del Batà are seen in half a day on foot through the old quarter. The fire-and-rocket Cordà, of national interest, marks the festive calendar of the town.
