The historic quarters of Chelva form the old town of Chelva, historic capital of La Serranía by the Turia. Three quarters survive: Arab Benacacira, Jewish Azoque and Morisco Arrabal, across the river, with the 14th-century San Francisco convent.
History
Each community held its quarter: Benacacira the Arab one, Azoque the Jewish one and Arrabal the Morisco one. The 14th-century San Francisco convent completes the set. The layout of streets and houses keeps the medieval plan of the town.
What to see
The streets of the three quarters, the 14th-century convent and the bridges over the river. Continue to the 17th-century Ángeles church, the Vizcondal palace and La Torrecilla, the Almohad tower.
Tips for your visit
- Walk the quarters on foot, in comfortable shoes.
- Start in the morning and leave La Torrecilla for after lunch.
- The Ruta del Agua needs another separate half day.
