Iglesia de San Bartolomé
Rectangular-plan parish begun in 1779 over the earlier one, by Francisco Sánchez on the Plaza de Baix.
On the Plaza de Baix in Petrer, home of the town hall, stands the San Bartolomé church, the old-town parish. Its construction began in 1779 over the remains of the earlier, smaller parish.
History
The work was commissioned by the Count of Puñonrostro to a rectangular-plan design by Francisco Sánchez. To open the space towards the Plaza de Baix, houses adjoining the earlier church had to come down; its door had faced Calle Mayor.
What to see
The rectangular 18th-century nave and the present images, replaced after the Civil War destruction, when the three main statues of the saints were lost. The Plaza de Baix, with its promenade and town hall, frames the visit.
Tips for your visit
- The church anchors the May Moors and Christians festival, tracing back to 1822.
- Pair the church with the castle, at the top of the old town.
