South of Elche stretches La Alcudia, the site of the Ibero-Roman town of Ilici. The Dama de Elche, the best-known Iberian bust, turned up here in 1897, and the grounds keep a museum over the dig.

History

Ilici was an Iberian town and later a Roman colony. The 1897 find of the Dama gave the site worldwide fame; excavation campaigns, still ongoing, have brought streets, houses and walls to light.
