Huerto del Cura
Historic garden of the Palmeral with the seven-armed Imperial Palm, cacti and Mediterranean planting.
Inside the Palmeral of Elche, listed as world heritage in 2000, lies the Huerto del Cura, its most visited historic garden. It gathers date palms, cacti and Mediterranean plants in grounds of classic layout.
History
The Palmeral orchards form a farming system of Islamic origin that survives inside the modern town. The Huerto del Cura was laid out as a visitable garden inside that ensemble.
What to see
The Imperial Palm, with seven arms growing from the same trunk, is the centrepiece. Around it grow cacti, pomegranates and orange trees among channels keeping the traditional irrigation.
Tips for your visit
- Pair the garden with the basilica: the centre is a walk away.
- Bring water in summer: the route is outdoors with barely any shade beyond the palms.
