Barranc del Cint
Town-edge gorge in the Serra de Mariola with a riverbed path between high walls and nesting vultures. Classic loop: 10 km, 450 m, 3.5 hours.
The Barranc del Cint is a gorge open on the southwestern slope of the Serra de Mariola, right beside the town of Alcoi, and it works as the natural gate into the heart of the natural park. The return follows the riverbed along a paved path between high limestone walls, with ledges where griffon vultures nest, and the climb to the hermitage gives aerial views over the town. The classic loop from the Preventori via the Ermita de Sant Cristòfol, the Alt de les Pedreres and the gorge The classic loop from the Preventori via the hermitage and the gorge is of medium grade.
Vultures and walls
The gorge walls hold griffon vultures, often seen circling over the path, with a feeding point nearby that keeps the birds in the area. The interior keeps a cobbled riverbed trail with steps, easy to follow, between narrow passages. It combines well with the nearby Racó de Sant Bonaventura and the Salt de Barxell, two more water corners around Alcoi.
Getting there
Drive to Alcoi, about 100 km from València; a car is needed, as no public transport reaches the trailheads. Routes start around the Preventori recreation area, at the gate of the natural park, where the park's yellow route also begins.
Tips
- Stay on the path and keep noise down under the nesting walls.
- Carry water: parts of the loop have no shade and no fountains.
- Wear shoes with grip for the cobbled riverbed, slippery when damp.
