What to see in Alcoi
Alcoy is the capital of the Hoya de Alcoy, about 86 km from Valencia, and one of the most populated towns in the Valencian Community, with 61,468 residents. Its textile, metal and paper industrial past shaped an urban layout of bridges over ravines that earns it the name of town of bridges.
The visit starts with the festival: the Museu de la Festa explains the April Moors and Christians, documented since the 17th century, and the San Jorge church is the patron's church. Under the Plaza de España hides the Llotja de Sant Jordi, Calatrava's underground hall, and under the Cervantes park the 1938 air-raid shelter recalls the wartime bombings.
In April, the Moors and Christians fill the streets for three days of parades dedicated to Sant Jordi, the oldest festival of this tradition. The rest of the year, the modernist bridges, the factories and the Font Roja natural park, south of the town, round off a trip mixing industry, festival and mountains.
