Castillo del Aljau
Remains of the medieval Aljau castle, one of the three fortresses on the Aspe coat of arms. A rural stronghold in the Vinalopó corridor.
Outside Aspe stand the remains of the Aljau Castle, a medieval fortress of rural origin. It is one of the three castles on the municipal coat of arms, together with El Río and El Calvario.
History
Aljau belonged to the network of minor fortifications watching over the Vinalopó corridor in medieval times. Like other strongholds in the area, it lost its military role over the centuries and today is visited as an open-air site.
What to see
The enclosure keeps stretches of wall and structural remains where you can read the defensive perimeter. From the hill there are views over the bagged table-grape fields of the Vinalopó, the crop that defines the Aspe landscape.
Tips for your visit
- Combine the outing with the Castillo del Río, the other visitable fortress in the municipality.
- Wear closed shoes: the ground at the site is uneven with loose stones.
