On the strait road between Calp and Altea, the ruined Mascarat fortress guarded the pass from the 16th century. Its walls watched the narrow crossing where the road squeezes between mountain and sea.

History

The fortress covered the royal road along the coast at a point raiders and armies had to cross. What stands today are ruined walls on the heights above the modern road tunnels.
