Forat de Bèrnia
Natural arch on the Bernia ridge crest, the classic goal of the ridge walk between the coast and the interior.
The Forat de Bèrnia is a natural rock arch on the crest of the Bernia range, a Prebaetic ridge between the coast and the interior valleys, in the municipality of Altea. It is the classic goal of the ridge route, one of the busiest walks in the Costa Blanca interior.
The route
It is a medium-difficulty route of about 4 hours, with crest stretches where you steady yourself with your hands and move calmly. It is not suited to small children or to anyone suffering vertigo. Autumn to spring walk best; in summer set off very early and carry plenty of water. Fog means turning back: the crest allows no shortcuts or rushing.
Crowds
It is a very popular point and weekends fill up: start early to park with room to spare and walk with fewer people. You get there by car, with a possible stop in Calp, at the foot of the range. Stay on the marked trail and keep off the drops for photographs.
