Muntanyeta del Cabeçol
A small hillock northeast of El Puig towards Puçol, still within El Puig's municipal boundary, very easy to reach and offering wide panoramic views over the huerta, the coast and the Mediterranean. At the top stands a ceramic panel of the Mare de Déu al Peu de la Creu, patron saint of Puçol, and the remains of a bunker from the El Puig Civil War defensive line. On the last Sunday of August the pilgrimage of Puçol's parish climbs here, recalling the 1570 discovery of a relief of the Virgin.
The Muntanyeta del Cabeçol is a low hill north east of El Puig, toward Puçol yet still inside El Puig's municipal boundary. The climb takes minutes and pays in a wide sweep over the huerta of L'Horta Nord, the coastline and the Mediterranean. It is an option for a short walk with views over the surrounding fields.
What waits on top
Two traces share the summit. A ceramic panel shows the Mare de Déu al Peu de la Creu, patron of Puçol, while nearby lie the remains of a bunker from the El Puig Civil War defensive line. Popular devotion and wartime memory side by side give the hillock an interest beyond the view, so walk both markers before settling at the edge.
The August pilgrimage
On the last Sunday of August the parish pilgrimage of Puçol climbs here, recalling how a relief of the Virgin came to light in 1570. That day the hill fills with neighbours from across the comarca; the rest of the year it sits quiet. Time a visit for that date if you want to see the pilgrimage, or choose another day for a quieter walk.
Walking notes
The ascent is short and easy, suitable for most walkers. Come toward dusk for the light lying across huerta and sea, and carry water in summer since the crown offers barely any shade. Continue the outing with a walk through El Puig and a visit to its monastery, or look at the village's Civil War shelters and trenches. El Puig pairs the hill with its monastery and wartime shelters, so the outing extends naturally into the village.
For broader horizons another day, climb the Garbí viewpoint in the Calderona or watch dusk settle over the lake at the Albufera lake viewpoint. Use these viewpoint guides to choose a separate outing, and take water if you plan to stay outside in summer.
