In the centre of Canals, the Borja tower is a 13th-century Muslim watchtower later built into the family palace. Restored in the nineties, it is the main Ruta dels Borja stop in the town.
History
The tower began as Muslim surveillance over the plain. After the Christian conquest it passed to the Borja family and was absorbed into their palace, where Calixtus III was born. The nineties restoration secured the tower and the wall sections.
What to see
The rammed-earth tower and the palace wall remains, with their phases explained. The Gothic oratory with the Last Judgment panel stands in the same complex. The church of San Antonio is minutes away.
