What to see in Novelda
Novelda, in the Vinalopó Medio about 125 km from Valencia, counts 26,606 residents among bagged-grape fields. Its skyline is marked by the Mola hill, where the Almohad Mola castle shares the summit with the modernist Magdalena sanctuary, by José Sala Sala between 1918 and 1946.
In the old town, the Casa-Museo Modernista by Pedro Cerdán (1900-1904) shows the interiors of the grape bourgeoisie. The San Pedro church, founded in 1553, completes the historic centre.
The San Pedro church, founded in 1553 and altered in Baroque, presides over the historic centre next to the Casa Modernista. The Vinalopó bagged-grape fields surround a farming town, and the Mola hill, with castle and sanctuary on the same summit, fills half a day: the usual route climbs the hill first and comes down to the old town. In autumn, the table-grape harvest sets the pace of the district fields and the local cooperatives around the town.
