On the main square of Algemesí, the basilica of San Jaime Apóstol is the historic parish of the town. It was built between 1550 and 1582 to a design by Domingo Gamieta, in the Valencian Renaissance period, and has centred local life ever since.

History

The church went up in the second half of the 16th century on the site of the earlier parish. It was listed as a monument in 1980. Its main feast falls on 25 July, Saint James day. The church is tied to the Festa de la Mare de Déu de la Salut, on the UNESCO list since 2011, which fills these streets every 7 and 8 September.

What to see

Inside, the high altarpiece by Francisco Ribalta, painted between 1603 and 1610, fills the sanctuary with scenes from the life of the apostle. The bell tower stands without inner pillars, an unusual solution. The Museu de la Festa completes the visit with the history of the town festivals.
