Alcalatén Castle rises on the hills of the municipality of Alcora, capital of the district it names. It is a rural fortress from the 10th-13th centuries, with curtain walls and tower remains on a rocky spur.

History

The Islamic castle guarded the inland routes and gave its name to the Alcalatén. After the Christian conquest it stood as a frontier fortress and was abandoned when power settled in the lowland town.

The visit is a rural outing, reached by track and path. Wear walking shoes and bring water. Pair with the church of the Asunción and the Ceramics Museum, in the town centre.
