The Peña Cortada Roman aqueduct crosses the gorge between Calles and Chelva. It is a 1st-century work cut into the ravine rock, with standing arches along the Ruta del Agua trail.

History

The Roman aqueduct carried water through the gorge by cutting the rock. The surviving arches show Roman technique in a narrow pass, designed to cross the ravine without going around it.

What to see

The cut rock, the arches and the channel above the ravine. The Ruta del Agua trail links Calles with the Chelva stretch. In the village, complete the visit with the 17th-century Purísima church.
