In Simat de la Valldigna, the Santa Maria de la Valldigna monastery is the Cistercian abbey founded on 15 March 1298 by Jaume II as a daughter house of Santes Creus. The Valencian Statute calls it the spiritual, historic and cultural temple of the old Kingdom of Valencia.
History
Jaume II gave the whole Valldigna valley to the monks by royal order. The abbey ruled the valley for centuries until the disentailment emptied it; restoration returned its cloisters and church to visits.
