Refugio-Museo de Cervantes
1938 air-raid shelter under the Cervantes park. Underground galleries open to visits recalling the wartime bombings Alcoy endured.
Under the Cervantes park in Alcoy survives the Refugio-Museo de Cervantes, an air-raid shelter built in 1938 during the Civil War. Alcoy suffered several bombings because of its industry, and the shelter protected the neighbourhood's residents.
History
The shelter was dug in 1938 to give neighbours cover during the bombings. After the war it fell out of use and years later it was recovered as a museum explaining everyday life under the bombs.
What to see
The route follows the underground galleries, with panels on the 1938 bombings, period objects and medical material recovered from the old hospital. The concrete vaults and narrow passages show what civil protection looked like then.
Tips for your visit
- Inside stays cool all year; bring a light layer.
- Pair the visit with the Museu de la Festa to round off a morning in the centre.
