Castell Vell y ermita de la Magdalena
Castle remains on the hill of the first settlement, with the Magdalena hermitage. Views over the Plana and the sea.
Castell Vell occupies the Magdalena hill, site of the first settlement of Castellón de la Plana before the move to the plain in 1252. Stretches of walls and towers survive, beside the Magdalena hermitage, goal of the yearly pilgrimage.
History
The hill was fortified in Islamic and Christian times until James I allowed the move to the plain in 1251. The Magdalena pilgrimage, every third Sunday of Lent, recalls that founding move.
