In the historic centre of Elche rises the Santa María basilica, the town's main church. It is a Baroque work from the 17th and 18th centuries crowned by a blue-tiled dome, and every August it hosts the Misteri d'Elx.

History

The basilica went up in the 17th and 18th centuries over the earlier church. Since then it has been the stage of the Misteri, the medieval religious drama listed as intangible heritage of humanity.
