Castillo de la Atalaya
12th-century Arab castle with Almohad vaults among the oldest preserved, on the town hill.
On the hill overlooking Villena rises the Atalaya Castle, an Arab fortress from the 12th century. It keeps Almohad vaults among the oldest preserved of this style.
History
The Islamic castle passed to Christian hands in the 13th century and stayed a lordship, principality, dukedom and marquisate until the rebellion against the marquis backed by the Catholic Monarchs. In 1525 Charles V granted Villena the title of city.
What to see
The keep crowning the hill and the rooms with Almohad vaults, among the first of their technique. From the top there are views over the town and its district, the second largest in the province at 345.6 km2.
Tips for your visit
- Walk down afterwards to the Santiago church, in the old town at the foot of the hill.
- The climb is on foot; avoid midday in summer.
