Castillo de Chirel
15th-century castle on a crag above the Júcar, with a keep and walled bailey. Reached on the GR-7.
On a rocky spur above the bends of the Júcar, Chirel castle guards the river canyon in the district of Cortes de Pallás. It is a 15th-century work, with a keep and walled bailey.
History
The castle went up in the 15th century to watch the Júcar passage through the canyon. Its spur position made it nearly unassailable, and today it ranks among the best-sited castles in the Valencian Community.
What to see
The keep, the walled bailey and the views over the Júcar bends. Access on the GR-7 needs mountain footwear. In the town stand the church of Los Ángeles (1775) and the Baron palace.
Tips for your visit
