Mirador del Santuario de la Cueva Santa
A cave-chapel at 811 m above Altura, made by shepherds, with an esplanade and valley views. A traditional pilgrimage destination.
The Cueva Santa Sanctuary, also called the Latonero cave, is a Catholic chapel inside a grotto in the Altura municipality, 811 m above sea level. Shepherds turned it into a chapel and it has been a traditional solemn pilgrimage destination ever since. It is reached on the Casinos to Altura road and works as a viewpoint over the Palancia valley.
Worship and pilgrimage
The image of the Virgin is venerated inside the deep cave, in an interior that invites silence. Pilgrimages fill the sanctuary and its esplanade on the appointed dates, when you should arrive early and expect little parking. Outside those days the place is calm and visits are unhurried.
Tips for your visit
- Sanctuary opening hours are unverified: confirm them with the town council before going.
- You get there by car; no public transport to the sanctuary is confirmed.
