Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor
Gothic church at the castle foot, with a Marian panel linked to Yáñez de la Almedina. The upper parish of the town.
At the foot of Ayora castle, the church of Santa María la Mayor is the upper Gothic parish of the town. Its medieval fabric faces the valley from the hillside.
History
Santa María began as the parish of the upper enclosure, by the fortress, while the town grew down the slope. The Gothic church keeps its medieval structure and frontier-church character.
What to see
The Gothic nave and the Marian panel linked to Yáñez de la Almedina, a Valencian Renaissance painter. The castle setting and valley views complete the climb. Below stands the church of the Asunción, the second parish.
