On the hill overlooking Novelda stands the Mola Castle, an Almohad fortress sharing the summit with the modernist sanctuary. Its walls and towers face the Vinalopó valley.
History
The Islamic castle passed to Christian hands in the 13th century and stayed as a watchtower over the Vinalopó corridor. Over the centuries it lost its role and today is visited together with the sanctuary raised beside it.
What to see
The walls and towers of the enclosure, with the valley below. The visit runs on into the Magdalena sanctuary, metres away.
Tips for your visit
- Climb at sunset: the stone of the sanctuary and the castle takes a reddish tone.
- The hill is outside the old town; it is reached by road with parking.
