What to see in Castellón de la Plana
Castellón de la Plana, provincial capital about 64 km from Valencia, gathers 183,711 residents between the city and the Grao. It was born on the Magdalena hill and moved to the plain in 1252, a move recalled every year at the Magdalena festivities, of International Tourist Interest.
The Plaza Mayor joins the co-cathedral of Santa María, 20th-century Neo-Gothic, and El Fadrí, the free-standing 15th-century Gothic belfry that symbolises the city. The 2001 Fine Arts Museum holds painting, sculpture and Valencian ceramics. Outside the centre, the 18th-century Lledó basilica houses the patroness, and Castell Vell with the Magdalena hermitage looks to the sea from the founding hill. The 19th-century Teatro Principal sets the old town listings. The city, fourth of the Valencian Community, joins the historic centre with the seafaring Grao and the Costa del Azahar. The old centre, of medieval plan, is walked on foot among squares and shopping streets.
