Bodegas subterráneas
Medieval cellar network under the old town, on guided tours from the tourist office. The wine underground.
Under the old town of Utiel runs a network of medieval underground wine cellars where the town kept its wine. They are visited on guided tours from the tourist office.
History
The centre houses dug cellars to raise plateau wine, in time forming a network under the streets. The guided tour covers the visitable stretches and explains traditional raising. The visit needs an hour with the raising explanation.
What to see
The underground galleries, the jars and the old-town vents. Above stand the church of the Asunción (15th-16th centuries) and, for the afternoon, the Wine Museum in La Bodega Redonda.
Tips for your visit
- Sign up at the tourist office in advance: groups are small.
- Bring a layer: it is cooler underground.
