Open in Google Maps

About 10 km south of Ayora, the Castellar de Meca sits on the rocky Meca plateau. It was an Iberian city-fortress cut into the stone, with rut roads for carts, cisterns and dug-out houses, plus later Roman and Muslim phases.

History

The Iberian settlement used the rocky plateau as a natural defence and completed it with walls. The ruts worn into the rock mark the cart access road. After the Iberian period, Romans and Muslims reused the site for its command of the plain.

What to see

The access road with its ruts, the rock-cut cisterns and the outlines of Iberian houses. The site is covered on foot and needs closed shoes. Pair the trip with Ayora castle and Santa María, in the town.
